چکیده
Abstract The paper defends an account of the context-sensitivity norms that draws on resources counterfactual conditionals. combines two assumptions: assumption permission is rule-abiding performance in some contextually relevant situations; and situations are picked out by mechanism selects possible worlds for evaluation explains non-monotonicity permissions solves a puzzle, raised Timothy Williamson, about seeming failure to distribute over conjunction. In domain epistemic norms, analogous puzzle deals successfully with so-called blindspot propositions.

Epistemic Norms and Rationality
Rationality is often said to be a normative concept: to be rational is not a descriptive feature of an individual or a system, but a normative one, since rationality pertains to what one ought to, or should, do, think or feel. But what is it in turn for an individual or system to ought to do, think, or feel something? I propose to start from this problem and try to see in what sense the notion ...
متن کاملDavidson on Epistemic Norms
Davidson’s philosophy can, in an important sense, be characterised as a form of normativism, the view that the mind has essential normative properties. But what is exactly the form of normativism that Davidson defends? In the first place, the norms of the mental, which are the norms of rationality in interpretation, do not have any normative force: they do not have any power of prescribing us h...
متن کاملMoore’s Paradox and Epistemic Norms
Why does it strike us as absurd to believe that it is raining and that one doesn’t believe that it is raining? Some argue that it strikes us as absurd because belief is normative. The beliefs that it is raining and that one doesn’t believe that it is are, it is suggested, self-falsifying. But, so it is argued, it is essential to belief that beliefs ought not, among other things, be self-falsify...
متن کاملCorrespondence between probabilistic norms and fuzzy norms
In this paper, the connection between Menger probabilistic norms and H"{o}hle probabilistic norms is discussed. In addition, the correspondence between probabilistic norms and Wu-Fang fuzzy (semi-) norms is established. It is shown that a probabilistic norm (with triangular norm $min$) can generate a Wu-Fang fuzzy semi-norm and conversely, a Wu-Fang fuzzy norm can generate a probabilistic norm.
متن کاملEpistemic Norms in a Nutshell
When modeling agents involved in scientific activities, one of the major issues is how to let them evaluate the reliability of evidence and the trustability of sources. In the real world of science, input judgment is a common, potentially complex task, of considerable interest for scientific practice and meta-scientific studies. It turns out that epistemic norms here constitute an important too...
